practical training and mathematics seminar for
mathematics students.
Starting
in the academic year 2008-2009
With the expansion of the Islamic Empire, the Muslims
had to move around all over the world and they faced a
serious problem when they had to set the direction of
Mecca at the time of their prayer. This problem came up
again, combined with the complications of special
architecture and decoration (tiling and calligraphy, but
no drawings of human figures, which are forbidden in
Islam), when they built mosques. Consequently, the
Muslims had to solve astronomical, architectural and
mathematical problems that they were not used to.
Therefore, they began translating most of what had been
developed in these fields by previous cultures (India,
China, Mesopotamia, Greece,
ancient Egypt and others). They also did their own
studies; improving, advancing, updating, modifying and
developing their own fields to give solutions to their
new problems.
In this site, we present some of the mathematical
contributions of the Muslim scholars, emphasizing their
own vision and special methods that they used to solve
their mathematical problems. We introduce some of the
important Muslim mathematicians in details, and tell
historical stories about concepts, procedures, methods
and relations that they developed, and could help the
mathematics teacher in adding some thrill, excitement,
and illustration to his teaching. We offer mathematics
lesson plans that include electronic presentations,
movies, simulations and electronic activities that could
be used to discuss and investigate mathematical problems
on exciting historical basis. In addition, we provide a
categorized data bank of links for mathematical sites,
specialized in mathematics history, for further
investigations.
Note 1: We translated to English only the menu
and home page of the site. As for the rest of the site
one could use
Google translate to get an idea of the
presented content.
Note 2: The option "Other Civilizations"
is yet to be developed and it is suggested for future
projects.
